Kenya and US initiate free trade agreement talks

July 15, 2020 – Last week, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Kenya Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization, Trade, and Enterprise Development Betty Maina formally launched trade agreement negotiations between the United States and the Republic of Kenya.

According to the report from the USTR office, β€œThe two countries recognize that an agreement between them has the potential to serve as a model for additional agreements across Africa, including with other East Africa Community (EAC) partner states.”

Two-way goods trade between the US and Kenya reportedly totaled $1.1 billion in 2019, up 4.9% from 2018. Top US goods exports to Kenya in 2019: aircraft ($59 million), plastics ($58 million), machinery ($41 million), and cereals (wheat) ($27 million).
