Launch of the Mekong-U.S. Partnership expands US engagement with the region
September 16, 2020 – The US, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam reaffirmed their long-standing relationship by launching the Mekong-US Partnership on September 11th.
The US Department of State announced plans, working with the US Congress, to increase support for the autonomy, economic independence, good governance, and sustainable growth of Mekong partner countries, noting that upholding these values is important also for the unity and effectiveness of ASEAN.
The Partnership will continue existing work and expand US areas of cooperation, including economic connectivity, energy security, human capital development, transboundary water and natural resources management, and non-traditional security.
