Panama, Costa Rica pet food purchases increase 18%

January 19, 2021 – In a report issued yesterday by CentralAmericaData, companies in the Central American region imported $110 million in dog and cat food from January to June 2020, 18% more than the same period in 2019, a rise that is explained by the increase in purchases from the entire region.

The US is the primary supplier. During the first six months of 2020, 28% of the value imported from Central America came from the USA, 24% from Mexico, 2% from France, 1% from Colombia and 1% from Brazil.

During this period, the main importer of dog and cat food slated for retail sale in Central America was Costa Rica, with $26 million, followed by Panama, with $25 million, Guatemala, with $18 million, El Salvador, with $17 million, Honduras, with $13 million, and Nicaragua, with $11 million.
