US seeks a Canada-Mexico tariff waiver to facilitate NAFTA

March 7, 2018 – Bloomberg reported yesterday that the Trump administration is offering to exclude Canada and Mexico from proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum to help reach a deal on a new NAFTA.

“President Donald Trump’s ‘view was that it makes sense that if get a successful agreement, to have them excluded,’ said USTR Robert Lighthizer in Mexico City following the seventh round of NAFTA talks.

Trump’s incendiary tariff threats have clouded the NAFTA talks, which are already on troubled waters. Upcoming Mexican presidential elections and US congressional mid-terms loom as barriers to a swift conclusion.
