USTR releases its 2019 Trade Estimate and Barriers for 61 countries

April 5, 2019 – The US Trade Representative (USTR) recently released its National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers (NTE), reporting on the largest export markets for the US.

Trade Barriers

The 2019 report covers 61 countries, along with the EU, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Arab League. It estimates the impact on US exports, US foreign direct investment (FDI), or US electronic commerce of specific trade barriers and other trade distorting practices.

This NTE classifies foreign trade barriers in 11 categories.
• Import policies
• Technical barriers to trade
• Sanitary and phytosanitary measures
• Subsidies, including export subsidies
• Government procurement
• Intellectual property protection
• Services barriers
• Barriers to digital trade
• Investment barriers
• Competition
• Other barriers that encompass more than one category
