With the Canadian deal in limbo, US seeking other bilateral trade agreements

September 27, 2018 – It’s pretty clear now that pulling Canada into a revised NAFTA this month is stalling out. Instead the US is finalizing its trade agreement with Mexico and pursuing other bilateral deals.

Abe & Trump

Yesterday, the White House announced a joint statement to enter negotiations with Japan for a “United States – Japan Trade Agreement on goods,” affirmed by President Trump and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Wednesday in New York City.

The agreement stipulates that:
• For the US, market access outcomes in the motor vehicle sector will be designed to increase production and jobs in the US in the motor vehicle industries; and
• For Japan, outcomes related to agriculture, forestry and fisheries outcomes constitute the major emphasis.

We can assume that the US will soon be in talks with other countries for bilateral talks as well.
