Looming West Coast port strikes cause shippers’ unease

According to a recent report from Everstream Analytics, in an effort to avoid anticipated congestion at West Coast ports due to a looming dock workers strike, shippers are looking to alternative ports.


These alternative ports include several on the East Coast as well as Gulf Coast ports. However, many of them are already stacked up with cargo vessels waiting.


For example, The Port of Charleston some 25 container ships were waiting to dock at the end of March. Other US ports are seeing a similar delay.


For some, Canada ports may offer a shorter wait time, although many of them are seeing delays as well. Mexican ports including the Gulf Coast Veracruz and Pacific Coast Lazaro Cardenas. See accompanying article, “Another Midwestern option to avoid congested West Coast port delays.”
